Freeform announced its January schedule, which includes the series premiere of the highly anticipated comedy “Single Drunk Female,” from Jenni Konner and Simone Finch, with a two-episode premiere on Thursday, Jan. 20, and new episodes of “grown-ish” on Thursday, Jan. 27. All titles will be available to stream on Hulu the day after the premiere.
“Single Drunk Female” will debut with back-to-back episodes on THURSDAY, JAN. 20, starting at 10 p.m. After its premiere, the series will air new episodes Thursdays at 10:30 p.m., following “grown-ish.”
In this dramedy, a public flame-out at a New York media company forces 20-something alcoholic Samantha Fink to seize the only chance she has to sober up and avoid jail time: moving back home with her overbearing mother, Carol. Back in Greater Boston, Samantha restarts her life, working at the local grocery store while surrounded by all of the triggers that made her drink in the first place. Confronted with remnants of her old life, including run-ins with her perfect former best friend, who is now dating her ex, Samantha sets out on a path to move past her worst self and figure out her best self. Kinda.
“Single Drunk Female” stars Sofia Black-D’Elia, Ally Sheedy, Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Compère, Lily Mae Harrington and Garrick Bernard. The series comes from 20th Television and is written and created by Simone Finch (“The Connors”), who will executive produce along with Jenni Konner (“Girls,” “Camping”), Daisy Gardner (“Silicon Valley,” “The Goldbergs”), Phil Traill (“Good Girls”), Nora Silver and Leslye Headland. Headland (“Russian Doll” and “Star Wars: The Acolyte”) directed the pilot.
Single Drunk Female, a comedy starring Sofia Black-D’Elia, has been handed a series order at Freeform.
The Disney-owned network has ordered ten episodes of the series, which is written by The Conners’ Simone Finch, after piloting the project.
It comes as Freeform has passed on its other current pilot, None of the Above, and picked up Phoebe Robinson’s adaptation of her memoir, Everything’s Trash But It’s Ok to pilot.
Single Drunk Female follows irreverent alcoholic Samantha Fink, who, after a spectacularly embarrassing public breakdown, is forced to move back home with her “Smother” to sober up and avoid jail time. But when her childhood BFF reveals surprising news, Samantha realizes she can no longer qualify as a party girl—she’s a walking disaster.
Black-D’Elia, who has featured in Showtime’s Your Honor and Fox’s The Mick, stars as Fink. It also stars Ally Sheedy, Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Compère, Lily Mae Harrington and Garrick Bernard.
Finch exec produces alongside Girls’ Jenni Konner and Good Girls’ Phil Traill, while Russian Doll’s Leslye Headland directed and exec produced the pilot. The half-hour project comes from 20th Television.
Freeform President Tara Duncan told Deadline she was “very excited” about Single Drunk Female. “This show really embodies the strategy that I’m putting forth at Freeform; it’s very funny and it’s also grounded in authentic stories from one of the writers, Simone Finch,” she said. “The thing I really love about this story is that it feels so of the moment. It’s about figuring out that journey and what you want to lay out for your life in terms of what’s going to happen next. It felt very relatable and sticky with what’s currently happening for our audience.”
Duncan confirmed that the network had passed on None of the Above.
The pilot starred Kidding’s Gregg Wayans and Snowfall’s Asjha Cooper as leads with Ron Taylor, Justin Miles and Katelyn Tarver also featuring.
The single-camera comedy, which came from Black-ish’s Kenny Smith, ABC Signature and Tornante TV, followed Cannon (Wayans) and his best friend Valencia (Cooper), two college friends that find their transition into the “real” world isn’t easy because they don’t quite conform to other people’s expectations.
The pilot marks the first order for new network president Tara Duncan.
Freeform is set to explore the life of a Single Drunk Female.
The younger-skewing, Disney-owned cable network has handed out a pilot order for Single Drunk Female and tapped Sofia Black-D’Elia (Showtime’s Your Honor) as its title character.
From corporate sibling 20th Television, the pilot revolves around Samantha Fink, who is forced to move back home with her “smother” to sober up and avoid jail time. But when her childhood BFF reveals surprising news, Samantha realizes she can no longer qualify as a party girl — she’s a walking disaster.
Simone Finch (ABC’s The Connors) will pen the script and exec produce alongside Jenni Konner (HBO’s Camping, Girls) and Phil Traill (NBC’s Good Girls). Leslye Headland (Netflix’s Russian Doll, Disney+’s upcoming Star Wars series) will direct and exec produce the pilot. Single Drunk Female is the first project to come from Konner’s overall deal with the former Fox 21, which was absorbed earlier this month with fellow Disney studio 20th TV.
Single Drunk Female is also the first pilot order to come from Freeform’s newly installed president Tara Duncan since she took over for Tom Ascheim earlier this year.
D’Elia will play Samantha, a writer who must leans on her mom for help. Ally Sheedy (High Art, The Breakfast Club) will play Carol, an overbearing but absent parent who is sick of sending Samantha to rehab. Rebecca Henderson (Russian Doll) will play the lesbian who works as a greeter at AA. Sasha Compere (HBO Max’s Love Life) will play Brit, Samantha’s former BFF. Lily Mae Harrington (Some Freaks) is Felicia, Samantha’s drinking buddy. Garrick Bernard rounds out the cast as James, a drunk who works in the tech industry.
